so yesterday, governor christie kind of went against the romney campaign general message, kind of raised expectations saying he was going to turn the race upside down, it was going to be a barn burner. think that was a mistake? >> chris is his own man, he's got his own views. i think chris is right to the extent that it's a very important debate for -- more important debate for governor romney than it is for president obama. we know president obama. we either like him, don't like him or are in between. lot more people have to get to know govern orromnor romney so more important debate. i think he has to be presidential. i think he has to convey the kind of person that people would be comfortable with as president. i tend to think we kind of score this as if it's a boxing match or basketball game. >> you know what it's like to debate mitt romney. i don't want to rehash any old wounds but i do want to play just some of the thing you guys got into and ask what he's like as a debater. >> governor romney, was new york a sanctuary city? >> absolutely. called itself a sanctuary city. in fact, i

in new york. >> jim, on the campaign trail, governor romney today more energized? >> absolutely. we were with him on his campaign plane during the day and as he got on the plane, he was smiling, he was laughing with his campaign staff. there was a spring in his step. there was an air of confidence in this campaign that i haven't seen in several weeks and in talking to senior romney advisor eric fehrnstrom, he said to me if this was a prize fight, they would have stopped the fight. that's how well they think mitt romney did. they're not going to be taking their foot off the gas pedal, i can tell you that the romney campaign came to the back of the plane just as it was landing here in virginia earlier this afternoon. they were starting to sense that the story, the narrative was starting to change from sort of a post-debate high for mitt romney to this new counter-offensive from the president going after some of the statements that mitt romney made during this debate. they came back to the back of the plane as the plane was landing and i asked ed gillespie, a senior r

ironically, the health care reform law mitt romney signed as governor and remains in effect today in massachusetts does mandate coverage for anyone with pre-existing conditions, whether they already have health insurance or not. a bit later in the program, we will talk about one of the few moments that mr. romney failed to strike a tone of moderation. it concerns a great big yellow bird. that makes it on our "ridiculist" tonight. a good friend of his, oscar the grouch, i can tell you it's really got my attention. first, ari fleischer with the serious stuff. he serves as part-time unpaid communications consultant to the romney campaign and political analyst, roland martin. ari, what do you make -- do you say that mitt romney is seeming to be striking some more centrist positions, or at least sounding more centrist? >> well, let me try to peel this onion one slice at a time. the 47% comment really breaks down to two. one is that the pejorative way he spoke about the 47%, which as i, you didn't show my clip, when you asked me about that the day afterwards, i said it was wrong, they're n

this 47% tape from governor romney is one of those rare moments in our polarized clutter of politics that actually breaks through. the obama campaign which had some stumbles early on is performing and executing pretty well right now, both in message discipline from the candidate and their tv advertisements which even republicans will tell you are better than the romney ads right now. so you add all that up, significant execution by the obama campaign, an advantage, little bump out of the convention, sure, some of it dissipated but these little things have the race and this is from republicans i talk to in swing states, trickling toward the president. is it irreversible? absolutely not. there are some people in washington who say this is over. forget what they say. there's a big debate next week. but governor romney right now as we speak and ari might say he doesn't trust this poll either runs even with the incumbent democrat when voters are asked this question, who do you most trust to handle the economy? if the challenger in this economy can't get a lead on the president on that que
